Courses can take anywhere from 15 to 20 hours to complete depending on weather, overall class progression and other factors. The BRC consists of classroom and on-cycle training, and can be completed in one weekend or four to five weekdays. Classes include:

• BASIC SKILLS: Straight line riding, turning, shifting, and braking.
• MENTAL SKILLS: Street riding strategies, special riding situations, proper riding attitude.
• PHYSICAL SKILLS: Advanced turning techniques, maximum braking techniques, swerving

Ride a scooter? (not a standard motorcycle) You can take the BRC on a scooter (see below)

• Cost: $50 (plus a $25 refundable registration fee to non-ABATE members*) Basic Rider Course cost for non-Indiana residents is $185
• Age: You must be 15 years or older (under 18 requires signed parental waiver)
• No permit or license is required to take this class.
• Motorcycles are provided for this class.
• Students should provide the following gear: helmet, eye protection, long sleeves, long pants (without holes), full-finger gloves, and sturdy over-the-ankle footwear.
• Successful completion of course will waive the state skills test for licensing and may qualify you for an insurance discount.
• Students should arrive at least 15 minutes before the class begins.
• There are no refunds and registration is NOT transferable. Once you are confirmed, there will be a $25 rescheduling fee to change your date.
• This class is on a pass or fail basis. ABATE of Indiana assumes no responsibility for any student completion of these rider education courses. To complete the course you must attend all sessions, pass a written and riding exam.
• Waiver for endorsement Effective July 2012, it is not necessary for a rider to take a written test, or acquire a motorcycle learners permit to obtain their endorsement if they have successfully completed an approved rider course. However, they must already possess a license (operators, chauffeur, CDL). PARENTS: Since the earliest a person can be issued a license is now 16 years and 180 days, please take that into consideration if your 15 year old wishes to enroll in a rider course. While 15 remains the minimum age to take a class, if they wish to take advantage of the waiver, they will need to wait until after they are 15 years 180 days for training.

Take the Basic Rider Course on a Scooter!

In response to the increasing popularity of scooters, ABATE of Indiana is offering scooter training as part of our nationally recognized Basic Rider Course. This segment of motorcycling continues to grow in popularity so it just makes sense to offer safety courses to those riders. With past studies indicating that 90% of accident-involved riders were self-taught, attending an approved rider education course is a key element of developing into a safer rider.

Scooters will be provided for a limited number of students to ride in the Basic Rider Course. These scooters will be step through motorcycles with an automatic transmission, and will have similar engine size to the training motorcycles provided in the Basic Rider Course. Except that scooters do not require shifting, the classroom and riding skills training for students taking the course on a scooter will be the same as it is for students taking the course on a standard motorcycle.

If you want to take the Basic Rider Course on a scooter (not a standard motorcycle), be sure to check the box that indicates you want to take this class on a scooter on the registration form since the number of scooters available in each course is limited.
